Simple Cause and Effect Framework

Category: Tags: ,

Description

This Cause & Effect Thinking Scaffold is a ready-to-use PDF framework designed specifically to support with learning how to write about the cause and effect of a particular event. You can adapt this to use with junior years, right up to NCEA and college readiness. It just depends on the topic you are teaching.

I’ve also included three examples to show how it can fit together.

Why This Scaffold Works:

  • Supports All Learners: This scaffold was intentionally created to provide extra visual support for students who struggle with abstract thought or organising ideas. It breaks down the process into clear, manageable steps.
  • Goes Beyond the Basics: It doesn’t just ask “What happened?” and “Why?” It guides students through analysing positive and negative effects, extracting key learnings, and forming a strong concluding thought.
  • Embeds Academic Language: By consistently using this framework, students naturally embed the logical and transitional language needed for strong academic arguments (e.g., consequently, as a result, leading to, on the other hand, for example).
