AR OR
The Yeet AR OR pack focuses on r-controlled vowels, specifically the patterns ar and or.
When a vowel is followed by the letter r, the vowel sound changes. The r influences the sound that comes before it.
You’ll see words like: car, star, farm, for, fork, storm.
Instead of hearing a short vowel sound, the vowel is controlled by the r. This is an important step for learners because r-controlled vowels don’t follow the typical short or long vowel patterns they’ve already learned. They represent a new category of vowel behaviour.
The vocabulary ranges from lower-level to more complex words, making this pack suitable for learners progressing through phonics, as well as older students who need structured reinforcement.
You can extend this pack by:
• sorting ar and or words
• comparing short vowel words with r-controlled words
• highlighting the pattern in connected text
• or moving into spelling once reading is secure
R-controlled vowels are a key part of understanding English vowel patterns. Once learners recognise that the r changes the vowel sound, decoding becomes much more predictable.
Each pack contains 54 cards made up of
1 Instruction Card
7 ‘yeet’ Cards
46 Vocabulary Cards.
Each pack of cards comes in a beautiful tuck box.
