Vowel Teams
The Yeet Vowel Teams pack focuses on vowel teams, where two or more letters work together to represent a single vowel sound.
You’ll see patterns such as: ai, ay, ee, ea, igh, oa, ow, ue, and ew.
You might see words like: rain, day, tree, seat, night, boat, grow, blue, and chew.
In each of these words, the vowel sound is represented by a group of letters working together as a team.
This pack is designed for learners who are ready to move beyond short vowel sounds and begin recognising long vowel patterns in more complex words.
The vocabulary ranges from lower-level to more complex words, which makes this pack flexible for learners progressing through phonics, and also for older students who are rebuilding decoding skills.
It’s important that learners understand that these letters are working together, not separately, to create one sound. This is also a great opportunity to begin discussing that sometimes one sound can have multiple spellings.
For example:
ai in rain
and
ay in day.
You can extend this pack by:
• sorting by vowel team
• comparing different spellings of the same sound
• highlighting vowel teams in connected text
• or moving into spelling once decoding is secure
Vowel teams are a key step in understanding that English spelling is pattern-based. Once learners recognise these patterns, their decoding becomes more flexible, and their reading becomes more fluent.
The cards contain lower and higher-level vocabulary words. Each pack contains 54 cards made up of
1 Instruction Card
7 ‘yeet’ Cards
46 Vocabulary Cards.
Each pack of cards comes in a beautiful tuck box.
