Built with the help of one of my amazing students, this sturdy, durable 6-sided Sentence Conjunction Dice will be an asset to your literacy sessions.
There are two (2) dice included. On one die, each of the six sides has a stick-on conjunction: and, but, because, or so. There is a second die, which is blank, and here you can add sentence starters.
Included with your purchase is a digital file with the conjunctions, along with 10 pages of sentence prompts from the following topics:
For each topic, there are 12 sentence stems.
***Please note that, for the space topic, a basic level of knowledge is needed to extend the sentence starters.
Simply laminate the page, then cut out the boxes. Attach them to the dice. You will be supplied with 12 stick-on Velcro hooks and 12 stick-on Velcro hooks, however you will need to purchase further Velcro loops yourself.
The idea is to roll the sentence starter dice, then the conjunction dice, and create a sentence that must be finished. For example:
Pasta is my favourite meal but __________________
Pasta is my favourite meal and __________________
I love my dog because __________________
I love my dog so _______________
It’s important to remember that each conjunction has a specific purpose:
But indicates a change of direction.
Because tells us why something happens.
And connects two sentences together.
So indicates a result.
Practising this orally first allows students to build confidence without the pressure of writing. They can experiment with different sentence endings, playfully explore ideas, and develop an understanding of how conjunctions change meaning. Once they are comfortable speaking their sentences, we can move toward writing them down.
